Governor Mung'aro and MP Amina Munyazi on the Spot Over Threats to Lobby Group

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung'aro and Malindi MP Amina Munyazi are on the spot over threats to officials of a lobby group that has been unmasking the rot at the county and Malindi CDF, respectively.

Governor Mung'aro and his associates are said to be after officials of the Concerned Citizens lobby group.

The group has been highlighting a series of damning revelations in regard to the controversial Timbo Taka dumpsite.

There has been an endless uproar over the Timbo Taka dumpsite, even as the Concerned Citizens in Kilifi push for relevant authorities to probe a Sh25 million tender to clean the site.

The Timbo Taka dumpsite, which is in Watamu, has become a health hazard, attracting criticism from environmental activists and concerns from stakeholders in the environmental sector.

The dumpsite is full of hospital and hotel waste, while at the same time, environmentalists are raising concerns over plastic waste pollution emanating from the place.

Those who have raised concerns over the dumpsite have reportedly faced intimidation, with some claiming to have been trailed for possible abduction.

Following this, the Concerned Citizens' fight for justice through its leader Fred Ogolla is calling on authorities to take action against responsible county officers and people threatening those who call out rogue county officers and poor policies from the CDF office.

The group's representative in Kilifi, Sir Emmanuel Okeyo, has written several complaints to authorities over the filth at the site, but this hasn't been responded to. Mr. Okeyo is believed to have been threatened and trailed by people linked to Governor Mung'aro.

"The county government has resorted to threats and intimidation to those who are correcting it instead of solving the issues raised," Mr. Ogolla said.

He said that the county has failed to resolve issues related to Timbo Taka land, which he claims is private land. He said the group has written to the National Land Commission for intervention.

"Timbo Taka is private land that the county has taken forcefully," he said.

He added that Ksh 25 million may have been lost in pending bills, which the county listed as an amount used to clean the filthy dumpsite.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has therefore been invited to probe all tenders floated for the improvement of the site.

The county had floated a Sh 25 million tender to clear and improve standards at the site.

Last year, it floated a tender for cabro works at Timbo Taka under notice number RTPW/1369960/2023-2024.

A probe of Environment Chief Officer Zamzam Ali and Environment Director Jimmy Yaa has been called for.

Generally, garbage collection has been an issue in the county, with several other tenders being probed as of now.

At the same time, the lobby group claims Malindi MP has been after its officials who called her out for allegedly giving out sewing machines to women’s groups only to later take them back at night before giving them to the next unsuspecting group.
