The Policy of Africanisation



The story behind the photo.

The policy of Africanisation, that was being pursued radically in the post independent Uganda rendered so many Europeans and Asians jobless. The policy was introduced by Milton Obote and retained by Amin when he took power.

Many of these Europeans and Asians had lived in Uganda for so many years while others were born there. Even though they called Uganda home their immigration status was in limbo.

After Amin came to power around 14 Europeans who were jobless approached Bob Astles (Idi Amin's advisor and hatchetman) and pleaded with him to talk to his boss to grant them Uganda citizenship.

Astle raised the matter with Amin who remarked in jest "Yes, but I must have my piece of cake out of it." This was very typical of Amin making jokes out of a serious situation before breaking into a hearty laughter. 

At first Astles didn't understand what Amin meant but when he prodded him further he clarified that he could only grant the 14 Europeans citizenship if they agreed to serve as reservists in the Ugandan Army.

Being desperate for Ugandan citizenship all the 14 Europeans agreed to serve in the Ugandan Army, but still, Amin had to put his decision before the Defence Council for approval. 

After the next meeting of the Defence Council Amin summoned all of them and declared their citizenship. Ink trays were then brought out and they were all fingerprinted to become citizens. 

But just when they thought they were done, Amin ordered them to kneel and swear. According to Astles the white men were so furious but they had to comply because they had already been granted what they were looking for.

"Amin had tricked them good and proper. They had got what they wanted. Now they had to give him what he wanted," Astles recalled.

PRODUCER CEDO SPEAKS ON FALLOUT WITH NYASHINSKI

Music producer Cedrick ‘Cedo’ Kadenyi has broken his silence over rumors surrounding his friendship with rapper and singer Nyashinski. The two reportedly fell out over a lucrative business deal. In June, Nyashinski reportedly asked Cedo to produce jingles for a client, offering Sh1 million for his work on a deal valued at Sh10 million. Initially, Cedo agreed, but after learning the full scope of the deal, he reconsidered and sought a higher fee.
